The extant remains of the Meta Sudans were demolished in 1936, but this photograph from 1858 shows that the inner core of the cone still stood at that time, with a height of over 29 feet (9 meters). The overall shape of the fountain is known from coins, but since nothing of the external structure survived into modern times, the relief carvings of statues shown on the model below are conjectural. It is estimated that the height of the fountain was at least 55 feet (17 meters) and the diameter of the circular pool was approximately 52 feet (16 meters). Domitian erected this fountain sometime between 89 and 96 CE, not long after the completion of the Flavian Amphitheater.
