Once upon a time, there were two young and happy mice. City Mouse is wealthy, beautiful, and dwells in town.
Country Mouse, who resides on a farm, is poor but upstanding.
City Mouse, while visiting the countryside, meets Country Mouse in the midst of a square dance in the farmer's barn. Dancing for the night, each begins to love the other. The urban family, however, supposes rural mice to be smelly, low born and eating moldy cheese. The rural family supposes the city mice to be boastful, squeamish, and wasteful. With their union forbidden by both their families, City and Country Mouse are miserable.
And so, City Mouse can only weep and blow her nose the entire day and night, since she lacks the light of her sweet life. Country Mouse does not desire to forsake his girlfriend and so forms a plan. On a bright and starry night, under the pale light of the moon, he creeps outside to find City Mouse.
He wipes away the tears of the City Mouse and gives tender little kisses to her ear. Together, they contemplate the banquet of their engagement. They prepare the feast and invite all the mice.
The little mouse lovers desire their families to be esteemed by one another, but the banquet is a disaster. All the mice fight for the cheese of many holes and for the wine and bite the tails of others. Since their plan was destroyed, City and Country Mouse sadly lie in a corner. Just then, Midnight (a black cat, mighty and insolent) interrupts the banquet! [. . . to be continued]
