Aurelia Nais Inscription

inscription for Aurelia Nais

AVRELIA C[ai] L[iberta] NAIS
PISCATRIX DE HORREIS GALBAE
C[aius] AVRELIVS C[ai] L[ibertus] PHILEROS
PATRONVS
L[ucius] VALERIVS L[uci] L[ibertus] SECVNDVS
[hoc monumentum fecerunt]

Aurelia Nais, freedwoman of Gaius, fish-vendor near the warehouse of Galba; Gaius Aurelius Phileros, freedman of Gaius, her patron; Lucius Valerius Secundus, freedman of Lucius [set up this monument] (CIL 6.9801; second century CE).

This beautifully carved marble altar contained three cavities on the top where cinerary urns or ashes could be placed, presumably for the three individuals named on the stone. The Horrea Galbana, a huge storehouse for grain and other food products, is located in the Emporium district along the Tiber. Although all the names on the stone are in the nominative, that of Aurelia Nais is much larger and her profession is given, probably indicating that she died first and the other two had the inscription carved. All are freed slaves and may have had shared business interests; Phileros is explicitly named as the former master of Nais.
