COELIAE CN[aei] F[iliae] MASCELLINAE
KOIL[IAC] MACKELLEI
NHC
Outer circle, in Latin: [belonging to] Coelia Mascellina, daughter of Gnaeus; Inner circle, in Greek: [belonging to] Coelia Mascellina (CIL 15.8166; second century CE).
This businesswoman's stamp (signaculum) was found in the Tiber near the Emporium district, where the great docks and warehouses were located. The stamp, shown in reverse above so the letters appear as they would when stamped on terracotta vessels, gives the name and filiation of Coelia Mascellina in Latin, and her name in Greek as well. Tiny amphoras separate the words, indicating the nature of her business.
