You see a busy moneychanger (nummularius) with several clients. One of his tasks is to test the metal and weight of coins to determine their true value; for this he uses a small, hand-held scale called a trutina. His main function, however, is to change money, either by exchanging foreign coins for Roman ones of equivalent value, or by exchanging certain Roman denominations for fewer coins of greater value or more coins of lesser value ("making change"). For such calculations he relies on the help of an abacus, for it is not easy to do arithmetic with Roman numerals! Nummularii normally charge a fee of up to 5% for this service, but the emperor has decreed that this fee should be waived in VRoma.
