Glyconis

portrait of Glyconis

I am called Glyconis, and everyone says I am as sweet as my name. My husband, Chariton, and I were both born in Greece and came to Rome as slaves, but we were freed by Publius Mattius and were able to legally marry. Chariton is as good as his name; he has always been nothing but kindness to me and to our sons. I have twin boys whom I adore; I think they are even more handsome than the divine twins Castor and Pollux. Chariton and I spend a lot of time in the thermopolium, for Bacchus is my favorite god, and I dearly love singing and dancing once I have downed a few cups of the divine grape. As Chariton (who fancies himself a poet) will tell you, I am very talented at making wreaths of flowers, for a garlanded head tells the world that you are ready to enjoy the sweet pleasures of life. Can I offer you a cup and a wreath?
