Armamentarium
You walk into the entrance hall of the Armamentarium, an open, high-ceilinged room whose beautifully executed floor mosaic immediately proclaims that this is a place for gladiators. Drawings on the walls show different types of gladiators in combat, and the many doors lead to storage areas where armor and weapons are kept until needed in the arena. In one corner stands a small marble statue of the goddess Nemesis. You are in the armory of the Ludus Magnus, the great barracks and training school for gladiators next to the Colosseum. This is the domain of Marcus Ulpius Callistus, an imperial freedman who keeps track of all the weapons, makes sure they are in good condition, and is forceful enough to keep the brawny but not too bright gladiators in line.
