long greaves

bronze gladiator greaves

You marvel at a shining and richly decorated pair of bronze greaves (ocreae) that extend well above the knees, offering some protection to the gladiator's thighs as well but making it hard to bend his knees (or run, if he has to!). The relief decoration includes theatrical masks and an eagle vs. snake motif (replica). Bronze rings enable the greaves to be strapped on the legs with leather thongs. You remember that long greaves such as these are worn by two types of gladiators who carry small shields--the Thraex (Thracian) and the Hoplomachus, the first with a nearly square shield and curved sword, and the second with long spear, round shield, and straight sword. These two frequently meet in combat.
