Via Appia

Via Appia

The journey begins on the "Longarum Regina Viarum" (The Queen of Distance Roads) The road was begun in 312 BC under the supervision of the censor Appius Claudius. The ostensible reason to build the road was to ease military and commercial expansions. It extended originally from Rome to Capua. Later it was extended to Beneventum and then to Brundisium. Here one could board a ship for a speedy journey to the west coast of Greece.

In 37 BC, Horace and Maecenas traveled the full 370 kilometers (229.9 miles) of the route. They were joined at Sinuessa by others, one of whom was Vergil. Horace describes the 15 day trip in humorous detail but he avoids mention of the reason for the trip. It is assumed the reason for the trip was to deliver a message from Octavian to Antony.
