You find a place where you may cautiously stand on a broad street that crosses Tiber Island, joining the Pons Cestius and the Pons Fabricius. As you proceed onto the island, you will be entering Rome's fourteenth region, called Trans Tiberim ("across the Tiber").
Wagons pass by with alarming speed, sending clouds of dust onto pedestrians. Some of the wagons carry vegetables to the Holitarium, the vegetable market near the Theatre of Marcellus on the Left Bank. (In retrospect you regret having chosen to explore the island at dusk, for Roman law prevented wagons from entering the city during the day). Crowds of people hurry in both directions on the thoroughfare, and you are often jostled by careless travellers.
