Library of the Portico of Octavia

mosaic of Vergil and Muses

You are hoping to get a look at a beautiful new copy of the Aeneid which you have heard that the library has recently purchased, so you enter the bibliotheca, or library. Passing by the shelves which contain the Greek manuscripts, you stand before the Latin scrolls, neatly organized in cylindrical capsae, or containers. You take some time to peruse the shelves which line the walls and notice the fragrance of new papyrus as you lean forward to examine the tags which identify the scrolls. The emperor Domitian had this building restored after the fire of 80 CE, and the librarians since that time have worked hard to restore the Greek and Latin collection to its former glory. There is a librarian here today who will speak to you if you click on his name and then activate to get his attention.

You may choose from the writings of many Latin and Greek authors by clicking on the following: Collections of Latin and Greek Literature.
