Cloth-Dying Store

As you walk toward this store, you feel the heat from a fire and see little wisps of smoke escaping out into the street.

As you stand in the broad doorway to this store, identified as IX.7.2 on your map of Pompeii, you see that the heat is coming from a heavy furnace with a cylindrical shape that contains a deep cauldron made of lead. Around the shop, you see various vats with clothes soaking inside them. These vats contain some type of softening agent. The next step will be to move the clothes into cauldrons that contain the dyes that are used to color the clothes.

As you are leaving the store, you notice an electoral poster on the doorjamb that offers the support of the dye workers (known as the infectores).

You return to the street to cross over the stepping stones that are just to the west of this store to get to the other side of the street to visit the fullonica.
