Palatine (Area Palatina)

Area Palatina

You stand before the might and magnificence of imperial Rome, the palace of the Caesars. Here in a vast open courtyard you behold the home of the emperors rising toward the sky.

To the right stands the Domus Tiberiana. In front of you is the Palatium, originally built by the emperor Domitian. A view of the interior is partially blocked by a steady procession of columns forming a portico, above which protrude ceremonial balconies. The palace is enormously complex and confusing. It is generally divided into the public portion (Domus Flavia), which you see before you, and the private quarters (Domus Augustana), which are located to the left behind the public part of the palace. To the rear, between the Domus Flavia and the Domus Tiberiana, is the magnificent Temple of Palatine Apollo, one of the showpieces of the building program of Rome's first emperor, Augustus, who located his home right next to the temple. You think to yourself that the Domus Augusti now looks rather modest compared to size and splendor of the huge palaces before your eyes.

Tristia To follow Tristia Tresunus to his sixth stop, take the Ramp to the Domus Augusti.
