Brundisium

temple

We arrive at the end of the Appian Way in this booming city that is the nearest port to Greece and Asia Minor. Two 60-foot columns mark the terminus of the road. From here Romans sail to Greece to study or perhaps to visit the oracle at Delphi. But they are hardly alone. Around them might be legionnaries preparing to sail to battles around the Mediterranean, couriers carrying dispatches, or merchants sending or receiving cargoes. It was in Brundisium that the poet Vergil died on 21 September 19 BCE, on his way home from Greece.
