Cella of Venus Genetrix

statue of Venus

Caesar was generous in his decoration of the Cella, although his taste was questionable. The cult statue of Venus Genetrix (see another copy) was by Arcesilas and was joined by a paintings of Ajax and Medea by Timomachus.

Timomachus Byzantius Caesaris dictatoris aetate Aiacem et Mediam pinxit, ab eo in Veneris Genetricis aede positas, octoginta talentis venundatas. (Pliny, N.H. 35.136)

Caesar also placed six dactyliothecae (collections of engraved gems) and a thorax decorated with British pearls in the temple.

These decorations were joined by a gilded statue of the general's lover, Cleopatra (Dio, LI.22.3; Appian, B.C. ii.102), which caused a scandal in Rome.
