Lararium

You see a somewhat mysterious, long narrow room, that may have been the palace's household shrine (home to the Lares). You catch a glimpse of a stairway, probably leading up to the balconies on the facade of the Domus itself. The conceit of providing this imperial structure with a grand version of a household shrine is somewhat amusing (although we should recall Domitian's devotion to the goddess Minerva). Access to the stairway and to a small doorway leading to the peristyle are currently blocked off.
