A crematorium is located near the Mausoleum of Augustus in the Campus Martius. The geographer Strabo describes it as a structure surrounded by a ring of black poplars, a wall of white, probably travertine, marble and an iron fence.
Excavations in this area have unearthed 6 large travertine cippi inscribed with the names of members of the family of Augustus, Germanicus' daughter and three sons, Tiberius, son of Drusus and a nephew of Vespasius.
