Stadium of Domitian

This monumental structure, whose arena was approximately 250 meters long, was built by the emperor Domitian sometime before 86 CE. It was designed for athletic contests in the nude, after the Greek fashion. Although it held up to 30,000 spectators, these Greek-style athletics contests were never really popular in Rome.
