Right Side of Altar

relief from ara gentis juliae
The altar of the Julian family seems to be decorated on all sides with solemn ceremonies. On this side of the altar, you see a flamen surrounded by his lictors (he wears the hat with the pointed top; they carry bundles of rods). You also see a boy carrying one of the lares of the imperial household. This must have been an important event--someone carved the whole thing in stone and placed it all right on the doorstep of Jupiter!
