Field of Mars
All of Region IX is known as the Campus Martius (Field of Mars), but this area contains some of the very few open spaces remaining in this popular region of Rome in 150 CE, probably because its proximity to the upper bend of the Tiber makes it vulnerable to flooding.
The Campus Martius received its name because of an old and venerable altar dedicated to Mars, the god of war and father of Romulus, founder of Rome.
