Tristia Tresunus - sixth stop

Ovid, Tristia 3.1

While I am marvelling at each thing in turn, I see a doorway that attracts the eye with shining armor and a house worthy of a god. "Is this the house of Jupiter?" I ask (an oak wreath put that thought in my mind). When I heard who was the master of this house, I said, "I'm not mistaken, this is truly the house of mighty Jupiter. So why is the door concealed by a laurel on either side, and why do those shady trees surround the august oak leaves? Does this mean that this house has deserved never-ending triumphs, or that it is loved forever by Apollo, god of Leucas near Actium? Is the house itself festive, or does it make everything else festive? Or is this a sign of the peace it has given to the world? Does this house have eternal glory, just as the ever-green laurel is never denuded with fallen leaves?

The reason for the crown above the doorway is witnessed by an inscription: it states that all the citizens have been saved by his aid. Oh best of fathers, add one citizen to the saved, one who, expelled from this city, lies hidden far away at the ends of the earth, one whose punishment (which he admits he deserved) was caused by his own mistake, not by a crime.

Poor me! I am afraid of this place and I am afraid of his power. My very letters are quivering with trembling fear. Do you see how pale my page is, with a bloodless hue? Do you see how my feet have begun to shake in alternating rhythm? Someday, I beg you, house, may you be reconciled with my father, and may he see you himself--under the same regime!"
